HIFU

Frequently asked questions

Is HIFU the appropriate therapy for me?

If HIFU is appropriate for you depends on different factors. Please contact the secretary of the Urology hospital and have these pieces of information at hand, if possible:

  • the medical history, concerning prostate cancer
  • results of the digital rectal examination (DRE)
  • volume and weight of the prostate
  • initial PSA
  • medication
  • results of szintigraphy, TRUS, MRT, CT, if available

This way, our physicians get a picture of the situation before they contact you personally.

Is HIFU robotic surgery?

No, HIFU isn’t robotic surgery because the physician acts independently and watches the treatment process at all times. The physician plans the treatment at the monitor and the HIFU device carries out the instruction automatically. The computer control reduces the risk of side effects and complications.

Is it possible to treat only parts of the prostate?

Yes, the HIFU technology allows the physician to place each single lesions precisely so that a partial treatment is technically possible. Unfortunately there are no reliable diagnostic methods available today to detect single cancer cells or very small tumors within the prostate. Therefore in most cases the prostate is treated completely.

After a partial treatment the chance to preserve potency is bigger then after a complete treatment, but the risk of recurrence is also higher.
