Exclusion criteria

Absolute exclusion criteria for a HIFU treatment are the absence of a rectum, such as after amputation due to bowel cancer and high-grade rectal stenoses.

Nor should HIFU treatment be performed after LDR brachytherapy either, as the permanent insertion of radioactive seeds represents an obstacle for the focussed ultrasound wave and could deflect this in an uncontrolled manner to surrounding tissue (e.g. rectum).
