Treatment of prostate carcinoma with High Intensive Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) HIFU is a minimally-invasive, alternative method used within the treatment of prostate cancer. Since 1997, more than 900 treatments have been performed at Regensburg University’s Department of Urology at Caritas Hospital St. Josef. Unlike a radical prostatectomy, no incision is required in connection with HIFU treatment. The treatment occurs via a probe which is advanced into the rectum. From here, precise imaging and treatment of the prostate are possible via ultrasound, which involves a low rate of side effects and complications.
